Looking
Back on 2002: A Message from the President of Friends of Narbeck Wetland
Sanctuary
Dear Friends:
2002
was a year of consolidating gains from our work over the previous 5 years.
In
March, Friends of Narbeck received reaffirmation of its status as a
501c(3) charitable organization from the IRS, in a "look back"
process applied to the first 5 years of new organizations.
In
April, we held a successful Earth Day work party addressing overgrowth of
alder and enhancing owl habitat. In May, we hosted a delightful
environmental awards program at the park honoring Darryl Thompson,
Lennie Rae Cooke and Dave Waggoner.
In June, Cub Scouts held a work party to spread mulch around trees and
plants. In July, the Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs took a
guided tour of the Narbeck site as a part of their annual meeting.
All
year long, we continued our support of the ongoing macroinvertebrate
survey of aquatic insects at Narbeck. Over the summer and fall, many
local schools and groups took advantage of our personally guided tours and
hundreds of visitors enjoyed their own self-guided tours through the
wetlands.
In
September, yet another work party was organized to continue vigilance and
action against invasives in the Park, most notably the well known purple
loostrife. In October, the Annual Meeting included a thoughtful discussion
and reexamination of our mission and goals.
Thank
you for making this a great year at Friends of Narbeck! I look forward to
working with you in 2003.
Jim
Maynard, Executive Board President
